Talent mobility refers to the movement of employees from one position to another within an organisation. The uncertainties thrown up by the Covid-19 pandemic led organisations to take internal talent movement policies seriously. It not only improves retention, diversity and inclusion but also develops a learning culture in the organisation. The chief goal of talent mobility policies is career mobility and an engaged workforce.

Why is talent mobility planning important?

Leveraging existing talent by creating better talent retention programs is essential for organisations to remain competitive in the corporate world. As per a recent research report by Deloitte, 76% of respondents said that internal mobility was important. It allows every workforce member to learn, grow, develop, and have a better career within the organisation. Enhancing knowledge and skills improves the employees’ professional capabilities, helping them keep up with the demands of a dynamic workplace. It promotes internal mobility across vertical and horizontal positions, geographies and domains to achieve the purpose.

Hurdles in talent retention

Companies have always struggled to retain their valued talent; post-pandemic, it’s become even more challenging. Three major concerns in retaining talent are:

  • Budgetary limitations
  • Social or cultural difficulties that can hamper talent portability programs
  • Data and innovation

Talent retention measures at various organisations

Capgemini India has covered over 65000 attendees through its initiatives like Career Fest and Business Unit sessions.

AMD India has embraced a ‘speak up’ culture where employees are given the freedom to express their aspirations and engage with various teams to evaluate potential internal movement options. It also conducts programs like Talent Pipelining, Succession Planning and Buddy Assist as part of the mobility process.

Saraf Furniture takes care of employee yearnings for internal mobility by providing various reskilling programs to acquire requisites for future projects.

Microsoft India holds an annual career mobility event called ‘Discover Day’ that helps employees connect and explore diverse roles and opportunities within the organisation.

With many organisations, talent mobility policy tends to grow organically as the company expands, leading to inefficient and inconsistent policies. A streamlined approach promotes flexibility where needed and achieves cost and process efficiencies that ultimately improve employee experience, productivity and retention.
