Traditionally students of engineering opted for courses in Mechanical, Civil, Electronics, Electrical and Electronics, Computer as they steered them towards interesting career opportunities in diverse industries. However, with the growing focus on skilled-based education as part of NEP 2020, there is a lot of demand for engineers in niche streams such as Aerospace, Biotechnology, Mining, Communications, and Big Data.
- Aerospace – This branch of engineering deals with the development, maintenance, testing, and study of aircraft and spacecraft. Aerospace engineering comprises aeronautical engineering and astronautical engineering. There is a huge demand for such skilled professionals from the airline industry, in the military, as well as from the spacecraft, satellite, and missile industries with ISRO, DRDO, Indian Air Force, and Airbus being some of the prominent employers. The average salary of an aerospace engineer in India is in the range of ₹6 LPA to ₹25 LPA.
- Biotechnology –This branch of engineering deals with the development and design of various chemical manufacturing processes and products. It is known to encompass the principles of chemistry, biology, physics, and math to work across diverse industries involved in the manufacture of chemicals, fuels, drugs, and other products. Some of the top employers for students with expertise in biotechnology are Tata Chemicals Ltd., Hindustan Unilever Ltd., and Pidilite Ltd. On average, a Biotechnology Engineer in India earns between ₹4 LPA to ₹15 LPA.
- Mining – A degree in petroleum engineering equips students with an in-depth understanding of hydrocarbons. They study the production, sustainable use, innovative techniques, and potential of Petroleum and related resources. As we are aware the reserves of Petroleum and other related resources are limited which makes it all the more important to use these resources wisely. Petroleum engineering graduates from all across the world are recruited by top resource-based industries and various governmental organizations such as ONGC, HPCL, NTPC, and Bharat Gas to name a few. On average a Petroleum engineer in India earns between ₹5 LPA to ₹40 LPA.
- Communications – A degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) is in high demand for developing, designing, and testing electronic equipment used in various communication systems. In the modern age of super-fast communication and network technology, there is great scope for Electronics and communication engineers in the broadcasting and communication industry specializing in satellites, telecommunications, research and development. These skilled professionals are much sought by the telecommunication industry as India currently has the second-largest telecommunication subscriber base in the world with 1.2 billion registered users. Siemens, Tata, Microtek, and Wipro are among the top employers in this industry. The average salary of a communications engineer is in the range of ₹3 LPA to ₹15+ LPA.
- Big Data Engineer – It is commonly said that ‘data is the new oil’ and Big Data Engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with complex and huge data sets. The work of a big data engineer involves designing, building, testing, and maintaining complex data sets. Big Data is a relatively new branch of engineering that seems to be eclipsing all others in terms of high demand. In the forthcoming year, big data is anticipated to be among the fastest-growing job profiles accounting for nearly 50% growth in open job positions. Several organizations with huge servers and large customer databases will rely on the services of big data engineers to manage this data. The rise of digitalization and cloud computing has led to an exponential growth in demand for big data engineers. Google, Amazon, Accenture, TCS, and Microsoft, are some of the leading employers in this sector. The average salary for a big data engineer ranges between ₹7 LPA to ₹15+ LPA.
Engineering as a discipline is necessary in boosting innovation and growth across all spheres be it infrastructure development, space exploration, or nurturing natural resources.
