Allot Land on Time for Central Institutes: HRD Ministry to States

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) has asked States where the new centrally funded institutes such as IITs and NITs have been announced to give land for setting up of campuses on time.

“Failing to give land on time leads to time and cost overruns and also affect the State government adversely as the institution to be formed there is taking more time to be set up. So, the students will not be benefited because of this either,” said an official.

The HRD Ministry has also said that if a State fails to allot land for a permanent campus on time, then the institute could be shifted to another State.

The issue of the land allotment has come up for two institutes — IIT-Goa and NIT Sikkim.

“Goa has allotted some land. We also have changed the system, earlier the Ministry used to announce the institution and then land was allotted. However, the six new IITs were announced only when the land was first allotted for them,” official added.
