Traders Warned Against Employing Children

Stern action would be taken against the managements of shops and establishments in the district if they were found utilising the services of children, warned Deputy Commissioner of Labour N. Subramanyam on Thursday.

At a roundtable organised here to discuss ways of making the district child labour-free, Mr. Subramanyam said it was a major crime to use child labour under the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986.

Officials of the Labour and Education departments, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, A.P. State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, and representatives of several NGOs participated. Mr. Subramanyam said awareness programmes and rallies would be conducted on the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour on June 12.

  • Appa Rao, member of the A.P. State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, urged the Education Department to conduct counselling for parents too so that they would not send their children for work.

He said the commission had full powers to inquire into and take stern action against persons and institutions concerned if they were encouraging child labour.
