Panel May Okay Trai’s Pricing For Spectrum Auction

The Digital Communications Committee (DCC) is likely to ratify the regulator’s pricing of 4G and 5G airwaves, besides deciding the quantum to be sold, at a meeting next week, setting the stage for what could be India’s largest spectrum sale.

“Meeting is likely on September 16. Trai’s recommendations are likely to be taken up… In all probability, they should get approved because there isn’t a way to lower the reserve price,” said a senior official at the Department of Telecommunications.

The official said DoT’s hands are tied in terms of the reserve prices after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) repeatedly stuck to its August 2018 recommendations even after the government asked it to reconsider them on the grounds that the financial stress in the sector would impair the buying powers of telcos, especially for 5G spectrum.
