New Regulations Ask Industries To Hire Locals In Karnataka

The State Government has notified a new set of labour regulations requiring industries, both government and private, to hire locals for jobs at levels 3 and 4. Such candidates, however, should have lived in Karnataka for at least 15 years and know Kannada to speak, read and write.

The new regulations are applicable to all industries that come under the Standing Orders Act. Labour Minister S Suresh Kumar had recently announced that the interests of locals will be protected in private sector hiring. The government followed the announcement with a draft notification of new regulations, and has issued the final notification after vetting the suggestions and objections received.

The new regulations require all those industries that have benefited from the government’s incentives and concessions to give “priority” to locals, who are residents of Karnataka for 15 years, while recruiting for jobs at level 3 and 4. The regulations, however, ask all other industries that have not received any sops to give “preference” to locals while hiring for jobs at levels 3 and 4.
