India Needs To Shift The Focus To Large-scale Employment

India’s formal employment sectors such as banking and IT services may come under pressure due to automation, but the country needs to focus on large-scale employment, according to an esteemed panel which took part in the third edition of The Economic Times India Dialogues in Bengaluru on October 22.

Rule-based jobs, which are a small proportion of employment in the country, will be disrupted by advances in technology, such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and robotics, in line with what is happening in the West.

However, high-end jobs that require creativity, as well as mid- to low-end jobs such as those in construction, manufacturing and micro-entrepreneurship will drive employment, the panel said.
