Labor Ministry Extends Public Utility Service Status to Iron and Steel Industry

The government had earlier granted extension to the iron and steel industry for a period of six months, starting from December 20, 2018.

Labor ministry has extended the public utility service status to services engaged in the iron and steel industry under the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947.

The government had earlier granted extension to the iron and steel industry for a period of six months, starting from December 20, 2018. This has now been extended for another six months with effect from June 20, 2019.

“The central government hereby declares the services engaged in the iron and steel industry to be a public utility service for the purposes of the said Act for a period of six months with effect from the 20th June, 2019,” labor ministry said in a notification.

In case of strike or lockout in respect of industries declared as public utility services, prior notice is compulsory either by employees or by management, respectively to the government.

Government aims to increase the steel build-up capacity in the country to reach 300 million tonnes by 2030, aligned with the target of National Steel Policy. Hence, there is an increased focus in the industry and government for 2030 in terms of raw material security, demand stimulation of achieving energy efficiency in the industry and leveraging country’s steel potential.
